Afghan Rulers Used Left-Behind British Technology to Locate Afghans That Served Alongside Western Forces, Investigation Learns
A whistleblower has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned classified equipment allowing the militant group to identify local individuals that had served with international military.
Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger
The source, called Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the data leak were advised to change residences and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
MPs are currently examining the UK government's management of a catastrophic breach of confidential data involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to move to Britain to escape the Taliban.
How the Leak Occurred
An electronic document including their personal data, such as identities, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.
The breach became known in late 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had applied to relocate to the UK surfaced on Facebook.
Militant Technology
Many believe there's a false assumption that militant forces lack comparable resources that western nations possess,” Person A informed the committee.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can trace your exact position. That's precisely what specialized teams did.”
During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, the source confirmed: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Information Leak
Early investigations provided to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the incident had been murdered.
A legal restriction concerning the leak was put in force in August 2023 and prevented any information concerning it from media reporting until mid-2025.
Security Recommendations
Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization associated with informed individuals at risk they were working with that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“We recommended that they change residence where feasible and changed their mobile numbers. Those were the crucial data that, if the Taliban had access to such data, would result in their location being found,” she said.
Disputed Conclusions
The source disputed that an official review conducted by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to conclude that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The important fact is that these Afghans are not confronting the authorities; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to past work history.”
The source explained horrific violence experienced by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
