Battlefield 6's Relaxed Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a new game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but features several key adjustments:

  • Each team has just eight human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by human gamers award complete experience points, while bot actions offer lower rewards.
  • Just a pair of locations can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
  • Elements like Player tags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.

In short, this mode delivers on its name: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives more options for gamers looking for alternative methods to enjoy the title. However, if video games have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many BF6 players are mad.

Player Reactions: From Fury to Support

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," states a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this title," while someone else details all the issues they consider to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."

However, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," states a different comment. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," while another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Concerns and Community Feedback

All that said, players have valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it will make queue times more extended for other modes due to the large amount of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Lastly, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. So this new playlist seems like the player base compromising in the middle, as per forum feedback. A different user labels this addition as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?

If the development team has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed very quickly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
