Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group invaded the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, police confirmed.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.
