People have assembled throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the morning session ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Points in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the region

Civilian Reaction

In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."

"When we see all home again, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of the population desire the war to finish in return for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the music event, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"As the evening arrives, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Situation

The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area indicated another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, medics reported.

The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
