Sensing As If Your Consciousness and Physical Self Are Separate? Here’s The Transformation When We Achieve Wholeness.
I just got back from jogging. It’s surprising to admit those words. I think it was likely ten years since I last did so. However It came to my attention that my tests indicate somewhat raised cholesterol, and I’ve been advised to do sweaty exercise on a consistent basis.
For the first time ever in my existence that the reason to be active has been my bodily well-being. In my youth, I ran because I wanted to lose weight. I also jogged to cure feelings of anxiety – I was merely escaping from the anxiety, instead of dealing with it. On other occasions, I jogged because I aimed to enhance at running. This was what it meant to me back then to build a superior lifestyle.
Jogging with altered intent at present prompted contemplation about the methods I’ve related with my physique during my years and the way it’s evolving as I transition from youth to being a middle-aged person. It seems unlikely I’ve honored my own body, not truly. I’ve prized it just for its functions and the aims it fulfilled for me: seeking approval; escaping emotions; achieving a quicker five kilometers. Previously, I’ve not understood that my body is me, it is my existence, rather than a tool for outcomes.
Much has been discussed for ages about the split between body and mind – which it’s comforting to know, I’m not going to precis here. What resonated most fascinating is Freud’s understanding that consciousness and physique are innately connected from birth, because bodily growth demands emotional evolution and the reverse is true. The infant’s corporeal feelings – such as the physical sensation of hunger – propel the mind to develop the skill to perceive hunger as an emotion that can be sated by eating; and the emotional comfort and fulfillment repeatedly brought by feed after feed feeds the child’s mind similar to the milk nourishes them corporally. Likewise emotional occurrences – for instance the desire to get up and attain a goal, and the determination to attempt repeatedly – are the reason and method physical strength increases. Starting at birth, mind and body are interlinked in shared growth as connected as DNA strands.
However It’s become clear, in sessions with my analyst, that my consciousness and physique can be in an alternate dynamic – a less unified and somewhat abusive. My consciousness may employ my physique to retain and manifest things that my mind deems unwanted or unacceptable. In analysis it emerged that exist particular emotional states that I fear I cannot bear; in place of feeling these in my mind, I unconsciously force them into my body, where they remain as bodily signs.
I previously experienced digestive discomfort – not connected to my diet, but represented a form of corporeal reaction of the sharper sentiments I couldn’t digest psychologically. It wasn’t an intentional act, but when it was brought into my consciousness through therapy, and my fear and vulnerability and rage and alarm became palpable and articulated rather than transformed into bodily feelings, it disappeared. I rarely suffer from stomach problems now.
The worst time I experienced this severe heartburn, I was unable to sleep for many nights straight. I felt I was losing my mental stability. I visited my doctor, who scheduled multiple scans and tests, but everything was medically abnormal. It turned out to be an alternate medic who suggested that the origin might be mental. My therapist concurred. I was shocked, but I also felt it was correct.
When a patient experiences a corporeal problem, they can be offended upon hearing that there might be an emotional origin. It can seem like disrespect, being told that their condition is fabricated. And of course it’s a real phenomenon – some face their suffering dismissed or wrongly assessed. However, sometimes it might be that the corporeal issues are real – certainly – and the cause is mental, the inner mind employing the physique to convey some pain or rage or whatever emotion the conscious self cannot tolerate. Occasionally, it’s easy to think our emotions is only valid when it is expressed through the body. We often undervalue our mental states as individuals, as a society and as a culture; why else can we allow the shocking killing-off of mental health treatments in public healthcare?
Personal insights have taught me that a better life cannot be created while caught unawares in ways of relating, internally and in relationships, that originate in disrespect, use and transaction. Such patterns are often easier to spot “out there” in the general public. It may be more challenging to think about their origins, and to see these forms within ourselves and within our closest relationships, in the workings of our psyches.
But persistence pays off. Upon wearing my jogging shoes once more following many years, heading out without aiming for a better body, or to escape an emotion, or to beat a personal best, {it
