The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of the state is experiencing dryness. This milestone follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Indicates Zero Dryness

The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that helped fill key lakes like the state's largest lakes well above their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays

The path to this point included intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, power outages, and fatalities. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, pockets like Modoc County were considered abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average

However, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean complete water security. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which provides about a third of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for future water availability. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the coming year.

“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map is entirely green, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation during the months to come.
