While Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Shows Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed cracking sounds echoing across the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a pair who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up at her rear. It was a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that certainly every part of you would tell you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of valour in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics treating numerous those hurt.

Local Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the patrol base next to the scene of the violence serving as a impromptu medical station. It was shared that colleagues were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the ocean to save people who were struggling.

After the events, statements of gratitude circulated widely. An online statement expressed gratitude for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The group of beach patrol issued a message, explaining they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and support. We are deeply moved by the care for our personnel,” the team stated. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it helps those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many professional lifeguards, said that the staff acted heroically from the second the shooting commenced through to late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“The team show dedication every day in keeping our world-famous beaches secure for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have seen in the face of such hatred.”
