Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
